Microwaving Wine

by Oliver McCrum » Thu Oct 16, 2008 1:05 pm

A convinced kitchen Luddite, I have never owned a microwave oven. About a year ago, my wife convinced me to abandon my prejudice, and I must now grudgingly admit that it's very useful for warming things up. Including wine; I have long thought it best to keep partial bottles of red wine in the fridge, but I don't always remember to take them out in time. Ten seconds in the microwave and there you are.

Has anyone else tried this?

Yup, do it quite regularly. Freaks out my wife, who is convinced the whole house will explode. She usually leaves the kitchen when I do this.

The secret, as you point out, is to give the bottle only short bursts of microwaving and check it frequently.

No. But I must admit that after giving in and finally buying a microwave two years ago, I used the thing often for about a month (novelty?). I haven't put anything in it for over a year now. I never seem to find the need for it, when I am so used to defrosting, warming, or cooking the Luddite way...

Yes, used to do it lots in the winter if a red wine was too cold - on full bottles - with capsule removed. But now that so many of my wines have metal screwcaps, I am loathe to put them in the microwave - years of being told metal and microwaves are a no-no. So now I use the 'immersion in warm water' method instead.

You did! It must have been a very, very weak moment!

Sue,

I just put the glass full of wine in the oven.

I've done it a few times (in a glass or beaker) with good results.
Certainly microwaves are useful for warming and defrosting (and use less energy that conventional appliances)

Yep, we put any too-cold wine into a 4 cup pyrex measure, then warm-away without worry of bottle breakage or metal closure interaction.
