WTN: 05 Jadot Clos de Malte, 98 Gouges NSG

2005 Jadot Santenay Clos de Malte
On the nose is juicy Burgundy fruit but at the same time it smells tannic and austere. The palate follows through because in some respects there is plenty of dark fruit but it is also very focused and lightweight. With air the fruit fills in a bit and provides flashes of nice enjoyment with crunchy and clear yet deep firm fruit. Yet, the drying tannins are always present and probably earn some demerit points.

Does anyone have guesses on how this will age? The drying tannins seem to suggest it requires age, and the dark firm fruit might be able to handle it. But the narrow and fragile frame makes me question how long it can really go and what it will turn into?

1998 Henri Gouges Nuits St. Georges
Mature resolved and comfortable with the sea bass in soy sauce, ginger, and other aromatics. Nothing to get excited about but for my tastes it was very respectable mature wine in the sub-$30 price bracket.

Also, for those keeping track, the 2005 Moritz Gogrewe Wiltinger Klosterberg Riesling Spätlese is just getting better and better and shows nice clarity on day three. I will indeed look for these wines in the future.

I have held other vintages of similar Jadot wines for 4 or 5 years with nothing but good results.

Thanks for notes. Surprised the Gouges is mature, wasn't sure any vintage of any Gouges was ready before 15!

Good to know. Not sure if this spoke to me enough to buy more, but it is really well priced.

I like to buy the lower-end domaine bottlings from Jadot (e.g. Pernand, Savigny). They are usually quite good value.

Well, I was only half in jest. The '88 village felt not ready to me at 17, and the '96 was pretty tight at 10. Of course those are both high acid and tannin vintages.

2005 is high tannin, but the ripeness is keeping the acids in check.

88 and 96 are different stories indeed. I don't know about storage on this one because I just bought it recently and that could always be an issue. But am going to pick up some more along with some other 98s to see how they do.

Coincidentally, I came across this wine at a trade tasting this afternoon and my manuscript note reads -

" N: Cherry and mint (or is it meat?) P: Good fruit, grip and structure."

I seem to have enjoyed it rather more than you but tasting impressions in a sip and spit context alongside some 50 other wines are subject to caution. There was an impressive line-up of reds and whites from Jadot, Bouchard P&F and W. Fèvre as well as other regions, on which I will post in a day or two.

I enjoyed it, although I can imagine that it might get lost in a huge tasting due to the austere tannic profile (maybe the other Jadots were even more so?).

Still, I wasn't necessarily motivated to buy more. At least not right away.

i was expecting really good things from the clos de malte '05; but haven't been impressed. i too own other vintages and did not buy this one. 'drying tannins' are never a good sign of agability. softer ones are.

Ok. And I understand that may be the result of hail in Santeney.

FWIW, I had my last Jadot Clos de Malte '98 about two years ago, and it still seemed like it would last easily for years and years. Perhaps we too often underestimate the survivability of even the "humbler" appellations of Burgundy in good hands.

My last tasting of the '05 Jadot was this past July. I think my note is not terribly dissimilar to Rahsaan's:

2005 Jadot Santenay Clos de Malte. This is a light ruby color, with a crisp aromatic profile featuring nice fresh berries, floral notes, bark and limestone. Though a bit on the thin side, it is nonetheless fuller-bodied than the crispness of the nose might suggest. Flavors of wild red berries, clean earth, soft vanillin and bright sour cherries are crisp and tightly-focused. It finishes a bit short, but with an inviting acidity that pulls one back for another sip.

I bought another 3 just to test one every few years over the next 5-7. Based at least on this tasting and on the pretty positive experience with a '96 I finished off last year, I have some decent confidence in this strategy.

And for the price it is hard to go wrong.

I am just very picky about what I purchase.
