WTN: Saladini Pilastri Rosso Piceno 2003

A blend of Sangiovese and Montepulciano.

A nose of leather, cherry and burned wood.

Medium-weight, fairly rich, black cherry, chocolate, earthy, barnyard, mint, tart acidity and a fairly heavy bitter streak. With time the wine became quite harsh and it developed a bizarre iodine-blood pudding flavour. Hmm.

Purchased at $13.95 Canadian.

The only Rosso Piceno I've had was a 2002 Bucci Pongelli. What I really liked about it was the light smoky, brineyness mixed with good fruit. It too was very (enjoyably) acidic but was not at all bitter. I'd certainly buy the Bucci again but I don't think I'd like the one you had here given the bitterness you describe.

It certainly is an odd wine. I recall the first bottle I tried was much better, it did have some of the bitterness (sort of bitter chocolate), but the bitterness wasn't as extreme as I found in this bottle.

Perhaps my next one will be better. I live in hope.
