From a vintage like 97, 'fair' at this point isn't bad. Few but St. Innocent made keepers. At least from what I understand.

Never had a Thomas. Have you liked them in other vintages or was this a one-off?

I loved the '97 in its youth. The '98, when I tasted it, was way too oaky. (I assumed that Thomas got his hands on some money and promptly ruined his style with it. However, I'm told by others that he is simply quirky and that some vintages since '98 have also been good. But I haven't tasted any of them.)
