WTN requests: Southern parts of Portugal

by Mike_F » Tue Aug 12, 2008 5:45 pm

Following on from my visit to Lisbon http://www.wineloverspage.com/forum/village/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=17250, I will be posting a few impressions and tasting note requests for wines from Southern regions of Portugal over the next few days. The first-

Catralvos, Vinho Regional Terra do Sado, Tinto, Reserva, 2005
This one purchased at the winery http://www.quintadecatralvos.com for 9 Euros, the back label states it is a blend of Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, spent 12 months in French & American oak, 14% alcohol. We opened this alongside some pasta, not knowing what to expect were very pleasantly surprised - a fine fruit forward wine with tannins well integrated, deep colour, could still improve over the next year or two as tannins soften, excellent value for the money. If one of the pro's out there can provide a note will be appreciated.

thanks,

Mike

From the deafening silence so far I suppose that Portugese wine experts are hard to find around here? Nonetheless, hope springs eternal, so any information on the following will be appreciated-

Terras do Sado region-
Herdade do Portocarro, Tinto, 2004
Quinta de Caralvos, 5000 Botelhas, Reserva, 2003

Alentejano region-
Herdade da Farizoa, Seleccao do Enologo, Tinto, 2003
Carvalho, Ribeiro & Ferreira (CR&F), Colheita Selecionada, Tinto, 2004

And one Port from the Duoro-
Casa de Santa Eufemia, 10 years old, bottled in 2006

Mr. Garr? Mr. Rogov? Anyone...??

thanks,

Mike

Hi Mike...I have some experience with Portugal as my fave winestore has a Portugese co-owner and a great selection. We had a Douro tasting here on this forum last year, I will try to find it.

I am a big Quinta do Crasto fan as well as Prazo de Roriz. Both DOC Douro.

Thanks Bob! Also read the other thread you unearthed with interest. Does your favourite Portugese wine shop owner stock anything from southern Portugal, or is he a strictly Duoro/Dao person?

No, it is a pretty good range from throughout Portugal. With winter coming soon up here (?!) I am already stocking up on some new releases.

`06 Versatil Tinto Alentejano Herdade da Malhada.

`05 Quinta do Infantado Douro.

I was told to look out for a port from these guys.

(Think there are some new listings coming in next week!).
