An Amazing Wine Bottle Trick

Here's a charming analysis of the relationship between the price of a wine and the depth of the punt or dimple in the bottom of wine bottles. The conclusion after the author designed a measuring device and surveyed a retailer or two:

There’s loads of scatter there. Don't worry. I did a proper statistical analysis. It’s 99.999% certain that there’s a relationship.

Bottles less than £5 have shallow dimples and bottles above £5 have deep dimples. £5 bottles are a minefield.

And here’s your handy equation

Price of bottle = (Dimple depth in mm + £3.49) / 4.3144


It's well worth reading the entire article -- the author tries to come across as quite naive -- but in fact he's done a good deal of very good research in the area of punts, [or dimples, or kickups, as you prefer].

A bottle of 1948 Massandra Collection Tokay cost me over $200. It had a totally flat bottom - no punt. No joking.

OTOH, 1921 Le Haut Lieu Vouvray cost me a fortune, and has a very deep punt indeed. A wide one, too.

Don't know about the going rate of Roederer Cristal — but sure enough, no punt at all.

That's a current wine that costs a fortune, not something 19th cecntury-like.

Oremus Tokaji Eszencia 1999 has no punt and costs (at least for a poor student like me) a fortune+++. I'm not very proud of my purchase of two ½ bottles: I prefer to drink good moderately priced wines rather than bloody good, bloodly expensive ones. Besides, as a student, I shouldn't be buying expensive stuff anyway. But with this, I couldn't resist: it's got nearly 20 g/l acidity!!!! It rocks and is even better than the 95! It's a funny report!
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
