I know of a similar story locally, but with a different outcome. When I started making wine in the mid-70s, there was a glut of grapes as the larger wineries in the Finger Lakes drastically reduced the amount of local grapes they had contracted to buy in favor of purchasing rail cars full of CA juice. As a result, there were a lot of grapes available to local home winemakers and I purchased some from one of the growers. The following year I went back to that grower's farm to purchase grapes and discovered he had committed suicide.
