WTN: Agua Negra Shiraz 2002

by Bruce Hayes » Tue Jun 13, 2006 6:13 pm

From San Juan province, Argentina.

A very interesting wine, purchased, primarily, because I had never heard of the San Juan appelation, never mind sampled a wine from there.

The back label states the grapes for this wine were "planted in 2000 (four years old)." I would assume this means that the vines were four years old when planted in 2000, which would mean they were six years old when this wine was produced.

Very dark purple.

Creamy, light milk chocolate on the nose.

Medium-bodied, juicy cherry and berry fruit, spicy, peppery, slightly floral, roasted notes, red licorice. Rather delicate: certainly not the "hit you over the head" style of Shiraz.

Very dry finish.

Bruce, I have just picked up a merlot from Argentina!! Intend to taste for WT 101, cost was $20 Cdn.

Saurus from Familia Schroeder, the `04 Merlot Patagonia Select.
http://www.familiaschroeder.com says the back label. No idea on this one at all. The appellation is new to me too, San Patricio del Chanar.

Good notes on that shiraz.
