Rules reminder: Real names, please, just like the old WLDG

I've just revised the registration page, replacing PhpBB's boilerplate with our own welcome and very brief rules recitation. Please note that in the NEW OLD WLDG we're back to our long-time tradition: Please register using your own, real name.

Welcome to the WineLovers Discussion Group!

We are glad you found your way here, and hope you will want to participate with us in the intelligent discussion of fine wine and its enjoyment. We welcome all wine lovers, from novice to professional.

Rules

Our rules are few: We ask that you register with your own real name, stay generally on topic, and avoid spam (commercial solicitations) and flaming (insults and personal attacks).

Moderation

I administer this group with a light hand, on the assumption that an intelligent community of adults is essentially self-governing. However, I reserve the right to delete messages for violation of the rules or for any other reason that I consider appropriate.

Copyright and the ownership of your work

Under international treaty (the Berne Convention) you retain copyright to your own tasting notes and everything else you publish on WineLoversPage and our WineLovers Discussion Groups. We assert no claim on your intellectual property other than (1) obviously, the right to publish it online under your name, and (2) a compilation copyright to the body of material on WineLoversPage, meaning, simply, that no one has the right to copy it wholesale without permission. In short, I respect your copyright, and I will go out of my way to help you defend it.

This should help!

Robin,
It's nice to see that the rules of civility are in place. Netscape was generally civil, but it was difficult to tell with whom you were conversing. Real names are the best way to go.
Cheers!
James Roscoe

P.S. What is an Avatar?

The funny little picture you see next to many forumite's names. Like my Italian chef.

Look in PROFILES, down at the bottom. You can pick an avatar from the library, or upload your own.

Robin... is there a way to add "Faustini" to "Paulo" in my profile, or do I need to delete the profile and create a new one? :)

Paulo, try going to Profile, and let me know if it will let you change. I've been trying to find the switch that lets users change their own names this morning, but haven't had much luck. Otherwise, it's not hard to delete and re-enter ... and if you can't delete, either, let me know and I'll gladly kick your butt out.

Only temporarily, though!

So who's this "cellartracker" dude, then? I hope he got punitive damages when he sued his parents for naming him that. :) :) :)

Paulo, try going to Profile, and let me know if it will let you change.

I tried - it won't let me. You can modify everything else except your name. You can boot me out anytime - I'll come back with avengence!

You're all set, Charles. We've vented your spleen, so to speak.

Sorry about that, I just switched it over to my real name.

Thanks, Eric, but don't worry, Paul was just hossin' around. It's sort of a soft rule, unless someone abuses it.

That's because it's about registration, Marc. We talk about wine once you get in here. :)

I used the moniker, "Jashue" (actually a misspelling of the Polish word for "Johnny") which was a nickname given me by an elderly neighbor when I was just a little tike. My mother has been calling me that for 38 years--- so in a way it's sort of my real name... and I'd just as soon keep it here.

But... I was registered on the old forum with my legal name of John Weidman, and if you would prefer it, I could re-register here with that handle.

Let me know!

signed,

Jashue
A.K.A John Weidman

btw--- I can't tell you how freaked out I was when I visited the old forum this morning. "Boy has this become a ghost town," I was thinking. And I was really quite sad about it. Good to see it alive and well! Tremendous resource, this is!

John, we try not to be hard-headed about it, as long as people don't use silly or incomprensible monikers (like Darth Viagra or Bfpzxttp).

Here's an idea: Feel free to use Jashue as your username, but consider putting "John Weidman" in your sig, so people will know there's a real person behind the nickname.

Good to see you back! I'm glad you found your way to the new forum.
