TN - Goose Bay Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Goose Bay produces a great Sauvignon Blanc virtually every year and it has great QPR. All of Goose Bay's wines are mevushal so you can use them at events, but my recommendation is that you treat them all as "drink now" because they die young. Here are my notes:

Hi Jon,

In your notes you state inaccurately that Goose Bay is the only kosher producer in New Zealand. O'Dwyer's Creek is another producer of kosher Sauvingon Blanc and Chardonnay in Marlborough, New Zealand, that actually produces non-mevushal versions of their kosher wines.

Given how awful the O'Dwyer's Creek Sauvignon Blanc was, Jon could likely stand by his statement of Goose Bay being the only kosher winery...

I have always enjoyed the Goose Bay Sauvignon Blanc but was blown away when I recently tried it from the newly used closure screwcap (all previous vintages and first batch of 2010 were synthetic cork). Beautifully fresh with pronounced grapefruit...I really think the screwcap has kept the wine fresher with even more citrus characteristics...and I suspect this one won't as Jon says "die young" - though that is still to be determined...

Wow Yossie - this may well be the second time that I can remember whee you say anything negative about a wine on a forum or your newsletter. More of that would be good, honesty in wine and wine reporting is the bedrock of a fluid society or marketplace. No need to slam if the product is good or fine, but if it is bad, people may well want to know.....

Gary - I did a tasting a couple months ago where we had a mix of corks and screwcaps on this wine. I was excited to taste them side-by-side. For now, I didn't pick up any difference, but as you say, let's see what happens in another year.

Allow me to respectfully disagree with you on this one. The O'Dwyer's Creek is very similar to the Goose Bay in its flavor profile, both exhibiting bright acidity, providing, what I believe to be, typical cool climate, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Personally, I am quite convinced that I could not tell these two wines apart if I were to taste them blind. Saying it was awful, I wonder what off flavors did you experience?

David - not sure what you are mean about honesty. I generally only write about wines I like (I write a wine recommendation newsletter) and simply ignore wines I dislike unless asked about them directly. Honesty is only relevant when folks write nice things about wines they didn't actually like...

Pinchas - I will need to dig up my notes from when I tasted this wine (never bothered to write up a detailed not given how bad I found the wine) and let you know specifically but I recall finding the wine really bad in a pretty dramatic way. Haven't had a chance to retaste to confirm whether it was simply a bad bottle but will certainly do so at some point and report back.

I tried the O'Dwyers SB and thought it was an ok everyday wine, not quite as good as Goose Bay SB, for about the same money. Would have been a great find at $12, not so compelling at $20...

Well, I had the chance to taste two of the best SB I have had in a long time. The O'Dwyers and the Red C SB:

That said, I have not tasted the newest release from Goose Bay, so I will have to hold off on the final winner - but of these two, the O'Dwyers started off the clear winner, but as the Red C came out of its oak haze it ran away with the ultimate winner prize - quite nice. Still, even after it was out of the oak haze, it could not match O'Dwyers brightness, but O'Dwyers could not match Covenant's lovely focus.
