2007 =ONTARIO's best VINTAGE ever..

I live in Ottawa Ontario so this is really good news:

THe 2008 vintage in Ontario might be a disaster (hail earlier this summer and lots of rain) but from a conensus of critics from barrel tastings is that the 2007 vintage is its best ever...
Tony Aspler is perhaps the top wine critic in Ontario--he has reviewed Ontario wines since 1975 (and says there was no Onatario wine worthg drinking before then) and even after the tremendous quality gains made in the Niagara and other Ontario wine regions over the last 10-15 years,he says 2007 is by far the best vintage he can recall for Ontario wines...so he is calling it the Greatest Vintage Ever for Ontario wines...in 2007 there were 1600 growing days rather than the usual 1200-1400..August was dry and a degree above normal --considered optimal in timing for a vintage .warm days,cool nights andthe tannins matured and the fruit riprened perfectly at 23.5 tond 24 degrees brix (2 degrees higher than normal) ..grape tonnage was actually down from 2006--so the lower yield but at optimum quality makes for an outstanding vintage...the Rieslings, and Sauvignon Blancs are being released to market now ,the better Chardonnays later and all these whites will be outstanding..but the vintage will produce exceptional stupendous Pinot Noirs (still in the barrel)--and even Cab Sauvs Cab Francs Merlot and Syrahs ripened fully and the Meritage blends will also be great as a result..

Looks like I'm buying "locaL" this fall and as the releases come next year and later from this great 2007 vintage here in Ontario.

As far as I was concerned we were producing world class whites for several years now--it only gets better with 2007...WE were really coming on as a Pinot Noir region and if this is spectacular as billed--look out world! For the other reds--well it pretty much is hit and miss depending on the vintage conditions....So that 2007 is great is cause to load up and store once they get released..

How can there be 1600 growing days (or even 1200) in a vintage when the year is either 365 or 366 days long?

What Michael is referring to is growing degree days, a method which attempts to estimate the amount of heat accumulation during a growing season.... http://www.entomology.cornell.edu/Exten ... eDays.html
