In the fun-house you can walk in front of mirrors which distort how you look.In life too things can appear one way and in reality....
A label on a product,a look on someones face;things arent always as they appear.
But then again sometimes we get that feeling-
this ones for real.Go with it when you have that feeling.Don't hesitate, dont stop.Lets give it all we've got.
Have a good one; h

The hebrew school teacher was describing how Lot's wife looked back and turned into a pillar of salt, when little David interrupted.

"My Mommy looked back once while she was DRIVING," he announced triumphantly, "and she turned into a telephone pole!"

on that note....we will have tonight saslove adom merlot 2006.

A late sandwich lunch today so even though a late night snack may be in order (I'm trying desperately to catch up on formalizing tasting notes from Sommelier and two other tastings), so no real dinner in sight. Instead we popped open (a very gentle pop I assure you) a bottle of Ayala's Brut n.v. Champagne. A most pleasing accompaniment to writing up tasting notes.

Just us two tonight; will try a bottle of 1996 Burgess Napa Valley cabernet that I got for a bargain price. And for a friend's special birthday will probably open a bottle of 1964 tokaji essentia, whih is almost as old as he just became.

Tonight opening my last bottle of 2003 Barkan Superieur Cabernet Sauvignon.
Well balanced and integrated elements, very nice and long finish. A bit too much spicy oak for me.
Slightly dissapointed but still a nice wine.

Shavua Tov Harry,
Last night a couple of bottles each of Yair Yatir 2003 and Castel Grand Vin 2004. Served with roast beef I thought both were good but the popular preference was for the Castel.
Today at lunch Barkan Reserve Carignan 2007. This went well with roast chicken and also (bearing in mind a previous thread on hummus/wine matching) with the preceding dish of hummus with ground lamb and pine nuts.

My philosophy of good wine is that Israel will make good wine not when there's this amazing super Special Reserve that is really exthatpensive but very good. Rather, my philosophy of when Israel (and everyone else) will make good wine is when I can go into a supermarket and find a young, but AMAZING and highly enjoyable wine that has good complexity, some aging potential if not a decade, and that, to use numbers, a critic would score let's say 88+

I say that in advance to "justify" my week end wine of Galil Mountain 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon, which I just found utterly enjoyable. And this after having attended the Tel aviv wine festival a few weeks ago (and, yes, ignoring Galil Mountain to try some wines I was less familiar with and the Sommolier event this past week.

But, for all the amazing wines I've drunk in the past 3 weeks, I have to say, the Galil Mt Cab Sauv is one of my favorites!

This weekend went for a Dalton Syrah Reserve 2005 - very pleasant wine but it's starting to throw some sediment. To me it did have distinct floral notes.
Shabbat day we had the Psagot Viognier 2007 - a nice version to me as I tend to find the varietal overly perfumy.

Alright, Harry, I give in. Here we go ...

Friday night we had Dalton Viognier 2007 with a grilled pecan-crusted salmon starter (served cold). We had the Herzog Cabernet-Zinfandel-Syrah 2002 with the roast beef main course, with a bottle of Yiron Syrah 2005 as a backup in case the Herzog was as bad as rumoured in another thread, and also because we were a large crowd and we thought more wine would be wanted (it was!). I am happy to report (as mentioned in another thread) that the Herzog was as wonderful as ever, with no sign whatsoever of the collapse mentioned elsewhere. With the dessert we had Chateau Piada Sauternes 2001.

Today we had a beef carpaccio with Yarden 2003 Pinot Noir, which proved to be an excellent combination. With the main course we had the remains of last night's Yiron Syrah, and a bottle of Carmel Cabernet Kayoumi 2005. With the dessert we enjoyed a bottle of Teperberg Late Harvest Riesling 2007.

Friday night had the 2003 Yarden Cabernet - This is a concentrated full-bodied wine that starts with black cherry and berries on the nose, adding plums, tannins and herbal notes in the mouth and finishing with a pleasantly bitter aftertaste of dark chocolate and licorice. This one still has many good years ahead of it.

With lunch we had the 2008 Yarden Sauvignon Blanc. A good rich SB with herbal and grassy notes complementing the fruit. This is not a really crisp and light SB, but more of a round one with a bit of wood influence.
Also opened our last bottle of 2008 Golan Moscato - time to move on to the 2009.

Not so much "appear" as "disappear". The family gathered for a farewell dinner before the Francophile and I head back to Latin America. Having cleared the fridge and the pantry, we sent out to the classy Indian restaurant down the road for a take-away feast. The food was excellent. The wines:

Shaw & Smith sauvignon blanc (Adelaide Hills, South Australia) 2009
Crisp and light; delicate citrus, juicy green apple, some pear and lychee. Clean acidic finish. Cleansing and gently zingy.

Te Henga sauvignon blanc (Marlborough, NZ) 2008
Also light and crunchy, with lively flavours of green apple, fruit salad, fresh herbal notes. Dry acidic finish. Slightly more flowery than the Shaw & Smith.

D'Arenberg D'Arry's Original shiraz-grenache (McLaren Vale, South Australia) 2004
I don't usually drink red wines with curry - why bother, the strong flavours cancel each other out to a large extent. But I had a small glass of this, and found it was soft and pleasant, without setting the world on fire. Cranberry, plum, a hint of grilled tomato, dusty tannins.

The Indian restaurant had also sent us a complimentary bottle of wine, on account of our having put in a big order. We opened it at the end of the meal, not expecting very much. We were right.

Hardy's Collection late picked ....
Late picked what? Well, we don't know. The label says, "Late picked premium fruity white wine". It is silent on the variety of grape, the region(s) from which they came, or the year of vintage. Could have been anything. Sultana, probably. It was thin, sweet and not worth drinking. We didn't. Don't you, either.

We'll be back just before Christmas.

Tried the 2008 Chenin Blancs from Baron Herzog -- both the regular edition and late harvest seem to be pretty ordinary this vintage. Still enjoyable nonetheless!

Also- a 2008 Bartenura Moscato was corked! I also noticed that they dropped the "Asti" designation on the bottle. Is this a new thing?

Hi Harry.
Friday night we opened two bottles of Cabernet Franc - Ella Valley 2006 and Gvaot Gofna 2007. These are our favorite CFs but we were not sure which one we preferred. One of our sons poured each of us a glass of each before we entered the dining room. The entire family agreed that they preferred the aroma of the one on the right but preferred the color, the clearness and after tasting unanimously selected the one on the left. It turns out that the preferred CF was the Gvaot.
We were invited out for Shabbat lunch for a dairy meal (only the 3rd time in my life eating dairy on Shabbat) and took a Tzora Neve Ilan Blanc 2008.

2003 Rothschild Haut Medoc Bordeaux, which I thought was very dry and not much fruit (old world?)

My friends had colds, so the 1964 Tokaji is back in storage. The 1996 Burgess cabernet was deee-lightful. Made from grapes on the eastern hills of Napa Valley - I think Howell Mountain, it was full of black fruit, smooth, and had a lengthy finish.

As usual, two wines on Friday: Barkan Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon +624 2003 and Barkan Altitude Cabernet Sauvignon +720 2003. Both very good; at the beginning, +624 was the favorite, but towards the end +720 was showing better.

Next day, a big crowd with different tastes, so I decided for something accessible (in both senses). The wine of choice was Galil Mountain Shiraz-Cabernet 2006. Quite a pleasant wine, not at all outstanding, but a good QPR (in Haifa, NIS 44.5).

Yatir Merlot Shiraz Cabernet 2005. This one has matured since I last tasted it. The flavors and aromas impact you immediately upon opening even before it settles down.

This weekend was truly an awesome wine weekend. Friday night began with Gabrielle Moscato for Kiddush (yes after the Humous thread I feel like I can actually write that!!) followed by a 2002 Herzog Cab Zin Syrah which was quite enjoyable. Shabbat Lunch we had a 1998 Herzog Alex Valley Cab which was brilliliant and holding up much better then the 2002 Cab, zin, Syrah as well as a 2000 Herzog russian river Chardonnay. Truthfully I don't recall what the wines were accompanied by other then sauted liver!!!
