Pascal Perrier 1999 Saint-Joseph Domaine de Gachon, $18
My New Years day wine. Perrier has long been one of my favorite affordable northern Rhones (affordable being a relative term here) and this bottle doesn’t let me down. It has an effusive nose with barnyard, earth, some flowers, pepper, smoke and some red and black fruits. On the palate, there is a mix of strong red and black fruit, maybe some plum as well, with notable earth and pepper accents, and a touch of herbs. Medium-bodied, fairly smooth though some tannins are present, and decent acidity. Excellent match with leftover turkey and cornbread stuffing. Importer: Robert Kacher.
