WTN: 2001 Smith & Hook Cabernet (Santa Lucia Highlands)

2001 Smith & Hook Cabernet Sauvignon Santa Lucia Highlands Grand Reserve, Soledad, CA.
$18. 14.5%abv. 3% merlot/8%malbec.
Decanted an hour before dinner. Deep dark shimmering purple. Explosive nose of dark sweet ripe plums and berries, tobacco, dill, and a little smoke. Mouthfeel is firm but very smooth. Sweet dark fruit flavors integrated well with the oak and a nice lingering chalky, Godiva liqueur finish. It's a decently priced, tasty cab.

That one is one of our favorites from the Monterey Region along with the Gallantes. You got a very good price on it though. Even a few years back, it was hard to find for less than $25.

I checked my records, Carl, and that was a late '04 price with 10% discount at a local MA/NH border shop. I think they still have some on the shelves.
Havent tried Gallantes but I'll look for it.
