exotic meats?

by Colin H » Mon Aug 18, 2008 1:39 pm

Anybody have any idea where can I get something besides the usual cow, chicken, pig, and sheep?

I could really go for some ostrich and horse, but I'll try basically any other animal I can get my hands on for a reasonable price.

What are some good ones worth trying? I've had a giant craving for new and different meats lately...

I have seen some pretty exotic meats at Mike Best's on Brownsboro Road next to the Party Mart close to the 264 exit. They can also order pretty much anything you need. I am almost sure I have seen ostrich in their freezers.

OOps I forgot. If you really want exotic meats, take the trip to Jungle Jim's. I have seen some really crazy stuff there. I think I even saw kangaroo meat there.

Luckily I'm due to stock up my beer supply in my fridge...

Just as an aside, I once had grilled Kangaroo at a restaurant in Beaver Creek, CO....no, it didn't taste like chicken, but had I not already known what it was, I would have sworn it was a beef tenderloin -- very tasty.

Probably the saddle ... I would guess the leg would be one tough chunk of meat ...

Isn't there a place in Indiana that sells exotic meats? I seem to recall it from a previous thread. Maybe they sell herbs too?

well they don't even have ostrich listed on their site! but whoa some of their meats are expensive. 1 lb of elk tenderlolin for $45?

unfortunately Mike's Best didn't have anything unusual at all.

Does anybody know anything about KY Bison Co? Do they have meats other than bison available? One of the butchers are Mike's Best said they did....

I can spend all day at Jungle Jims and still not get bored. From rattlesnake to fresh durion...that is THE place for all things food. I think they now have a trout pond in the store and a light rail system to ferry you around the perimeter??

KY Bison told me they started carrying some exotics but I would call first as this was a few months ago. There number is 562 9491. Vance is the sales guy and Amanda will most likely answer the phone.

I know it wasn't a leg cut....but I recall the consistency being very similar to a beef tenderloin....actually, quite tasty (sorry, Skippy)...
