Food in Isle of Palms/Charleston SC

by Jean P » Sun Jun 15, 2008 12:04 am

Hi, heading down to the Isle of Palms next month outside of Charleston and looking for any good dining ideas? We've been in the area a few times before but it has been several years and looking for suggestions - casual and upscale.

Thanks.

McCrady's Restaurant

FIG (Food is Good)

both in Charleston.

I haven't visited Charleston, but both restaurants are putting out incredible food and if it's of note, chef Sean Brock of McCrady's was nominated for the 'Rising Star Chef of the Year' award for this year's James Beard Foundation awards, as was chef Mike Lata of FIG for 'Best Chef Southeast'.

I put vegetables in your desserts, white chocolate with your fish and other nonsense stuff that you think shouldn't make sense, but coax the nonsense into something that makes complete sense in your mouth. Just open your mind, mouth and eat.

I can highly recommend Magnolia's in Charleston. Shrimp and Grits from the Mothership of Low Country goodness.

The best seafood we had in Charleston was a place called "The Wreck" It is a hole in the wall local place that we actually went two twice in one week. Keep in mind - this is not upscale - their table and chairs are plastic but is is a really neat "local" place that has awesome fresh seafood.

Thanks for all the great ideas! The last time we were in Charleston we tried to get into FIG but it was a Friday night and they were packed. We'll have to check it out again but with reservations.

Ed - We love Magnolias. I fondly remember a great beet salad I had there that helped me to fall in love with beets again.

Since we are going on vacation with a crowd, it is nice to have a variety of choices and I will pass all of these along as recommendations from the HotBytes crew.

Thanks again.

I would definitely have to agree with the McCrady's suggestion. We ate there a few years ago and it was a very memorable meal.

Another place we liked was Cypress.

I just moved here from Charleston a few months ago!

Close to Isle of Palms you have The Old Village Post House: http://www.mavericksouthernkitchens.com ... ation.html
It is part of the Maverick group which includes SNOB and High Cotton.

I second FIG and McCrady's. Be prepared to wait in a line outside the restaurant if you go to Jestine's.

For some more casual, local places I would suggest:

Poe's Tavern: http://www.poestavern.com/ - great burgers-they grind their own meat.
Gaulart & Maliclet (the locals call it Fast and French): http://www.fastandfrench.org/G&M/G&M_index.html - Their seating is community-style, so you have to be prepared to eat with strangers, but I think it's a great way for tourist to meet and talk with the locals.
Sermet's: http://www.americascuisine.com/charlest ... corner.htm - great food and atmosphere, perfect for people watching.
Pane E Vino: http://www.charlestoncitypaper.com/gyro ... oid%3A9891 - wonderful wine bar. The owner is Italian and they do great authentic Italian dishes.

Have fun in the Lowcountry!

While in Charleston area last fall, we ate at "High Cotton" right on East Bay Street. It was wonderful. I thought we weren't dressed for the restaurant, but they assured us we were "fine" in our slacks and sweaters. The food was amazing, so was the service. I didn't realize it was a part of a 'chain' until I looked it up for you.
