RockWall in Floyds Knobs

by Lonnie Turner » Thu Jun 05, 2008 8:20 pm

Drove buy a couple of days ago and again this evening. Also called earlier as well as tonight. There is no answer and there are a couple of Century 21 real estate signs posted out front. Anybody know anything more?

I certainly hope it's thriving ... it's one of the nicer restaurants in the metro area. We were up just a couple of months ago and had a fine dinner.

Very sad news, folks. I'm reliably informed that Rockwall has closed permanently. This is a damn sheme, as it was an excellent restaurant with exceptional atmosphere, and only a very short drive from Louisville.

I've said this many times before, but it bears repeating as the nation's economy slides: If you love our city's excellent independently owned and operated restaurants, support them with your dollars. Don't just talk about it: Go out and dine there, early and often.

I was there a month ago and had a fine meal and local beer. I was there a couple of days ago and saw the for sale signs.

What's even more disturbing is that Rockwall is sitting in the middle of sprawl central, surrounded by new developments named, as usual, after what they destroyed. What is it exactly that all those people buying $500K+ houses do support?

Given the mortgage market and general economic climate, they likely eat ramen noodles at home.

And with gasoline at $4/gal, if they're driving those SUVs at all, they're probably not taking them very far ...

I have heard that their chef was doing some really good work there. Sometimes you can do everything right and still not make it in the restaurant business, especially given the current economic situation. Support your local restaurants so we can keep our great dining diversity.

Take a drive down Veterans Parkway in Clarksville...

Havening been reared in Southern Indiana, I feel more than qualified to make this statement

Wooo Hooo... We have an Olive Garden and a Cheddar's and a Longhorn Steakhouse..etc...(I saw it on TV so it must be good!)...

How can you explain the worst breakfast(or any meal) in the world that is the IHOP over there?...

I think it goes like this...

Honey, let's pack up the kids and go shoppin an eat somthin'....

The status quo wins again!

The same thing happened to Stratto's....

Clancy..Feel free to chime in at any moment...

I whole-heartedly say ditto to what Dan just said, from another lifelong hoosier.

My office is right in Jeffersonville by the hospital. All my employees were born and live in the Clarksville, Jeff, and Charlestown area. To a person not one of them has the least interest in fine dining or ethnic food with the exception of Mexican/Chinese/Pizza. If I take my staff out to dinner it's either Buckheads, O'Charleys, or Chedders. I brought them over to Martini's Grill, still a chain, they hated it, Stoney River, still a chain, same. Sushi, Indian, Thai food....not even a chance. Wanted to bring them to Louisville for a nice holiday dinner this past year....the vote was the Spaghetti Factory (gross).

My point is that a restaurant, to be successful, has to meet the needs and desires of those in a geographical proximity to support it. In the 10 years I've been working in Southern Indiana great strides have been made in introducing dining alternatives. Fine dining just hasn't been able to make the in-roads that ethnic food seems to be making. Give it another 10 years.

The Rock Wall up in the Knobs was just too far from Louisville to consistantly get enough traffic to be financially viable I guess.

It's really a blind spot for Louisville folks, I'm afraid. I could easily get to RockWall in 15 minutes from my home in Crescent Hill. Frankly, it was less of a pain than going out to Springhurst or Hurstbourne, because it was a straight shot across I-64 with virtually no traffic lights. (Asterisk: Assuming I didn't try to cross the bridges at rush hour. ;) )
