Ramírez de la Piscina 1995 Rioja Crianza ($8.99)Very dark garnet, almost opaque. Black fruit aromas show first, soon overtaken by a very odd but not unpleasant mineral scent that's startlingly reminiscent of rusting iron. Black-fruit flavors show over a firm acidic structure, but the wine is quite austere for a Rioja, lean and tart, with that odd "rusty" quality persisting in the finish. U.S. importer: Cutting Edge Selections, Cincinnati. (July 25, 1998)
FOOD MATCH: Worked well with pork chops in a mildly spicy Mexican pipian (pumpkin seed) sauce.
