Cline 1995 Cotes d'Oakley California Vin Rouge ($7.49) Dark garnet with a bright reddish-purple edge. Ripe red-fruit aroma with fragrant black pepper and earthy (not "barnyard") notes. Juicy mixed-berry flavor backed by floral pepper and lemon-tart acidity, mouth-filling and bright. Drops off a little in a medium finish, but remains clean and crisp throughout. A blend of Carignane, Syrah, Mourvedre, Cinsaut and Alicante Bouschet from dry-farmed 75 to 100-year-old vines, goes through whole-berry fermentation then sees French oak, an odd combination but one that seems to work. Fine wine, excellent value. (June 2, 1997)
