Viña Alarba 1996 Calatayud ($5.99) In these wine-inflationary times, it's a rare thing to find a wine of decent quality for $6; but this hearty red from Aragon in Northeastern Spain certainly fills the bill. Very dark garnet in color, it offers up ripe cherry-berry fruit and spicy oak aromas with an earthy hint of "tree bark." Simple, fresh and juicy fruit flavors are framed by tart acidity. There's little complexity here, but it's a good quaff and a good food wine, and an excellent value. U.S. importer: Cutting Edge Selections Inc., Cincinnati. (April 13, 1998) FOOD MATCH: Fine with peppery roast beef.
